Hong Kong Youth Scrabble Team 2022 Online Qualifier

The World English-Language Scrabble Players Association is expected to be organising an online international youth Scrabble events ("the Youth Event") from mid-October to late-October 2022. Enrollment to the Youth Event will be managed by the National Associations. Hong Kong will be allocated several quotas which will be managed by the HKSPA.

Hong Kong Scrabble Players Association will arrange the formation of the Hong Kong Team for this tournament. All Team members will be regarded as the "Hong Kong Youth Scrabble Team 2022".

Eligible players

  • Players must be born on or after 1 January 2005. Qualified players must provide a copy of their passport or birth certificate for verification, which will be passed to the organiser.
  • To play for or play under the name of Hong Kong, players must meet the criteria in the Hong Kong Player Statuses Regulation.
  • Those who wish to participate in the qualifying process must be HKSPA Individual Members of session 2021 – 2022. Qualified players must renew their membership for session 2022 – 2023.
  • Qualified players must make themselves available on every Saturdays and Sundays from mid- to late-October 2022, or other dates as announced by WESPA subsequently.

Qualifier arrangement

Prominent Scrabble players in Hong Kong may be eligible to be qualified by ratings. All other players shall qualify via an online Qualifier.

Qualify by HKSPA Ratings

Players who satisfy the following criteria automatically qualify without the need to play in the Qualifier:

  1. Have played at least 50 HKSPA-rated games as at 31 July 2022, and
  2. Have played at least 1 HKSPA-rated game during 1 August 2020 and 30 July 2022, and
  3. Have a peak rating of 1900 or above between the aforementioned period, and
  4. Is a HKSPA Individual Member.

Qualify by Qualifier

The spots will be allocated by a one-day online Qualifier. All interested players, who are not qualified by ratings, will need to play in the Qualifier.

The details of the Qualifier are:

  • Date: 28 August 2022 (Sunday)
  • Time: 11:00 - 19:00. You need to present yourself online for registration at 10:40. Round 1 starts at 11:00 sharp. A lunch break will be arranged in between. The finishing time of the tournament may vary subject to the actual tournament schedule.
  • Venue: The Qualifier will take place online on Woogles.io. You are recommended to stay in a place with stable internet connection.
  • Format: 8 rounds (Round 1: Random Draw, Round 2-4: King-of-the-Hill ("KOTH") with no repeat allowed, Round 5-7: KOTH with 1 repeat allowed, Round 8: KOTH with unlimited repeats). Players from the same school can face each other. The format may be subject to changes depending on the actual number of signed-up players.
  • Game settings: 5 points unsubstantiated challenge penalty. 15 minutes per player, maximum overtime 1 minute with 10 points overtime penalty.
  • Dictionary: Collins Official Scrabble Words 2021.
  • Prizes: There are no prizes to be awarded in this Qualifier. e-Certificate of Participation is available upon request.

Enrollment

To enroll (no matter whether you are eligible to be qualified by ratings or not), please fill in this Google Form on or before 21 August 2022 23:59 (Hong Kong Time). Please make sure you have a Woogles account and an active HKSPA membership.

We will be supervising all players for their online game. You will need a webcam on the computer (either integrated or connected externally) you play your games on. Then, share your video feed to us via vdo.ninja. Alternative arrangements could be made with prior communication with the organiser (via the email address below).

HKSPA will enroll the qualified players to the Youth Event. As a non-profit organisation, HKSPA will be collecting a Qualifying Fee from all qualified players to cover the cost, which includes the Entry Fee to the Youth Event and administrative charges. The Qualifying Fee would be around HK$400 to HK$450, which will be confirmed in due course when more information from WESPA is available.
