Suspension of enrollment
In view of the updated details of the WESPA Youth Cup 2021, the format for the Qualifier may be changed and enrollment is temporarily suspended. We will provide further updates as soon as possible.
The Virtual WESPA Youth Cup 2021 (Individual) will take place online from 31 July to 8 August 2021 (weekends only). Hong Kong is given 3 or 4 quota for the tournament. Hong Kong Scrabble Players Association will arrange the formation of the Hong Kong Team for this tournament. All Team members will be regarded as the "Hong Kong Youth Scrabble Team for the Virtual WESPA Youth Cup 2021 (Individual)" and the entry fee will be borne by the Association.
Eligible players
- Players must be born on or after 1 January 2003.
- To play for or play under the name of Hong Kong, players must meet the criteria in the Hong Kong Player Statuses Regulation.
- Those who wish to participate in the qualifying process must be HKSPA Individual Members of session 2020 – 2021.
Qualifier arrangement
In view of the limited quota given to Hong Kong in this tournament, all players shall qualifier via a Qualifier, i.e. There are no spots reserved for players qualified by ratings this year.
The spots will be allocated by a one-day HKSPA-rated Qualifier. There are 8 spots in the Qualifier. All eligible players may enroll for the Qualifier. However, in case the number of enrolled players exceeded 8, players will be selected by their Peak Ratings (including provisional ratings) from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2021. A player with a higher Peak Rating will have priority over a player with a lower Peak Rating.
The details of the Qualifier are:
- Date: 10 July 2021 (Saturday)
- Time: 11:00 - 19:00. Registration starts at 09:45. Round 1 starts at 10:00 sharp. An hour lunch break will be arranged. The finishing time of the tournament may vary subject to the actual tournament schedule.
- The Qualifier will take place physically. Information about the venue will be communicated with enrolled participants in due course.
- Format: 7 rounds, Round Robin, 5 points unsubstantiated challenge penalty. 25 minutes per player. WESPA Rules Version 4. Players from the same school can face each other.
- Dictionary: Collins Official Scrabble Words 2019 (CSW19)
- Rating: This tournament is HKSPA-rated.
- Prizes: There are no prizes to be awarded in this Qualifier. e-Certificate of Participation is available upon request.
As a non-profit organisation, we will be collecting entry fee to cover the cost of sponsoring qualified players to the Virtual WESPA Youth Cup. The entry fee per player is HK$50.
All participants must bring their HKID card (passport or birth certificate showing that Right of Abode/Permanent Residence is established if they do not have a HKID card) to the venue for verification. Players who can only show a photo or copy of the HKID card (passport or birth certificate showing that Right of Abode/Permanent Residence is established if they do not have a HKID card) have to pay an administrative fee of HK$50 per tournament day. Registered participants would not be allowed to play if no identification documents are shown.
