Update: The Qualifier has been cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. All enrolled players will qualify automatically.
The Individual WESPA Youth Cup ("IWYC") 2021 will take place online from 7 August to 22 August 2021 (weekends only). Hong Kong is given 6 quota for the tournament. The tournament is going to be on individual basis. However, enrollment to the IWYC will be managed by the National Associations.
Hong Kong Scrabble Players Association will arrange the formation of the Hong Kong Team for this tournament. All Team members will be regarded as the "Hong Kong Youth Scrabble Team for the Individual WESPA Youth Cup 2021". HKSPA will subsidize the entry fee of the players (€40 per head).
Eligible players
- Players must be born on or after 1 January 2004. Qualified players must provide a copy of their passport or birth certificate for verification, which will be passed to the organiser of the IWYC.
- To play for or play under the name of Hong Kong, players must meet the criteria in the Hong Kong Player Statuses Regulation.
- Those who wish to participate in the qualifying process must be HKSPA Individual Members of session 2020 – 2021.
Qualifier arrangement
In view of the limited quota given to Hong Kong in this tournament, all players shall qualify via a Qualifier, i.e. There are no spots reserved for players qualified by ratings this year.
The spots will be allocated by a one-day online Qualifier. All eligible players may enroll for the Qualifier.
The details of the Qualifier are:
- Date: 10 July 2021 (Saturday)
- Time: 11:00 - 19:00. You need to present yourself online for registration at 10:40. Round 1 starts at 11:00 sharp. A lunch break will be arranged in between. The finishing time of the tournament may vary subject to the actual tournament schedule.
- Venue: The Qualifier will take place online on Woogles.io, which is the same platform as the IWYC will take place.
- Format: 9 rounds (Round 1: Random Draw, Round 2-4: King-of-the-Hill ("KOTH") with no repeat allowed, Round 5-8: KOTH with 1 repeat allowed, Round 9: KOTH with unlimited repeats). Players from the same school can face each other. The format may be subject to changes depending on the actual number of signed-up players.
- Game settings: 5 points unsubstantiated challenge penalty. 15 minutes per player, maximum overtime 1 minute with 10 points overtime penalty.
- Dictionary: Collins Official Scrabble Words 2019 (CSW19) without expurgation will be the official dictionary used.
- Prizes: There are no prizes to be awarded in this Qualifier. e-Certificate of Participation is available upon request.
Players must make sure they are available for the WESPA Youth Cup matches on the tournament dates. The matches which Hong Kong is required to play are tentatively scheduled on (Hong Kong Time):
- 7 August 2021 (Saturday) at 19:00 (with Middle East and Sub-Continental countries)
- 8 August 2021 (Sunday) at 09:00 (with America, Malaysia and Oceania)
- 8 August 2021 (Sunday) at 20:30 (with European and African countries)
- 14 August 2021 (Saturday) at 19:00 (with Middle East and Sub-Continental countries)
- 15 August 2021 (Sunday) at 09:00 (with America, Malaysia and Oceania)
- 15 August 2021 (Sunday) at 20:30 (with European and African countries)
You will be playing 6 games online per session. You will additionally be playing a Round Robin Final on 21-22 August if you are the top 10 players.
Enrollment
To enroll, please fill in this Google Form on or before 7 July 2021 23:59 (Hong Kong Time). Please make sure you have a Woogles account and an active HKSPA membership.
As a non-profit organisation, we will be collecting entry fee to cover the cost of sponsoring qualified players to the IWYC. The entry fee per player is HK$50. The entry fee should be paid by transfer via Faster Payment System (FPS). Players should also pay the membership fee of session 2020-21 (if applicable) if they are not a HKSPA individual member of session 2020-21. You will be notified the FPS payment ID after your enrollment is accepted.
Similar to the IWYC, we will be supervising all players for their online game. You will need a webcam on the computer (either integrated or connected externally) you play your games on. Then, share your video feed to us via obs.ninja or vdo.ninja. Alternative arrangements could be made with prior communication with the organiser (via the email address below).
