(Update 15 Sept 2017) 7 players enrolled in the Side Tournament as at today. The application period for Side Tournament will be extended to a time when the 8th player applied, or the day before the tournament begins, whichever is earlier. Grab your chance to enroll!

Eligibility:
Players who born on or after 1/1/2000
Side tournament open to HKSPA individual members only (players can join HKSPA membership before the start of the tournament)

Format:
6 games, first 5 rounds Swiss Draw, last round King of the Hill (KOTH)
25 minutes per player, free challenge, WESPA rules version 3

For side tournament
7 games, round robins (8-player groups based on the HKSPA ratings immediately before the tournament)
25 minutes per player, 5 points unsubstantiated challenge penalty per word, WESPA rules version 3

Individual Youth Awards

(Players may receive more than one award, e.g. the Best Under-14 Player might as well be the Best Under-16 Player)

School Awards

  • Best Performing Secondary School – trophy
  • Second Best Performing Secondary School – trophy
  • Third Best Performing Secondary School – trophy
  • Best Performing Primary School – trophy
  • Second Best Performing Primary School – trophy
  • Best Player from a School – medal

(Results will be collated for the top 3 finishers from each school; those with fewer than three players will not be counted and will not receive the best player from a school award)

For side tournament, the Winner of each division will receive a winner certificate.

Certificates of participation will only be given to participants on request. Participants should make their request during their application.

Entry Fee:
For individual application:
Players meeting the age criteria can apply individually with an entry fee of HK$50. HKSPA individual members can enjoy $10 discount on the entry fee.

For school application:
Schools with at least 3 players can sign up via “school application”. Each HKSPA School Member has 6 free quotas. All other schools in Hong Kong have 4 free quotas. (It is free to join HKSPA School Membership: http://hkscrabble.org/membership/)

All schools can send an unlimited number of players with an entry fee of HK$50 per player for the non-free quota ones. The player can enjoy $10 discount if (s)he is a HKSPA individual member.

Schools with less than 3 players are not eligible for school application. Students of the school may sign up as individual applicants and pay the entry fee for individual applicants. Students of the school will be regarded as individual applicants if the number of students appeared on the spot (before the first round begins) falls below 3 even if the school concerned register via school application.

For side tournament: HKSPA individual members can apply with an entry fee of HK$50. Players who are not members yet can fill in the online application form beforehand and pay the membership fee during registration on the day of the tournament.

How to enter:

Schools are normally not allowed to change the players after the application deadline.
There will be a limit on the number of players who can participate in the event. You will be informed the application result in due course. Normally, application is accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

Verification Policy:
As we need to confirm your name, your age (for the Individual Youth Awards) and your school (for school prizes), you are required to observe the following verification policy.

For individual application:
You MUST bring your HKID card to the venue for verification purposes. Players who forgot to do so could show us a photo of the HKID card for verification with an administrative fee of HK$50. You will NOT be allowed to play if you failed to present your HKID card under any circumstances, even if you know the committee members personally.

For school application:
Students MUST bring their student card AND HKID card to the venue. Players who forgot to do so could show us a photo of the student card and/or HKID card for verification with an administrative fee of HK$100/HK$50 (Each electronic copy costs HK$50 administrative fee). If you failed to show us your student card but HKID card, you have to pay the individual application price ($50) and will not be allowed to compete for school prizes. If you failed to show us your HKID card but student card, you have to pay the individual application - side tournament price ($50) and will only be allowed to compete in side tournament. If you cannot show us both document, you will NOT be allowed to play even if you know the committee members personally.

You may bring your birth certificate in lieu of an HKID card if you do not have an HKID card. You may also use your student handbook in lieu of your student card if your school does not issue student card.
