Association Cup 2022
Update (18 May): The venue of the tournament is now confirmed to be Shop 5C, Lai Chi Kok Bay Garden, 272 Lai King Hill Road. It is reachable with a 5 minutes walk from Mei Foo Station Exit G. To facilitate schools' arrangement, the deadline of enrollment is now extended to 26 May 2022. As the space is very limited, applications will be accepted strictly on a first-come-first-served basis.
After two years, the Association Cup is back! The Association Cup is an annual Scrabble tournament for primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong during summer. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament has not been organised in 2020 and 2021. With the easing of social distancing measures, HKSPA hopes to brings back school Scrabble with this prestigious tournament!
COVID-19 related announcements
Due to the uncertainties posed by the ongoing pandemic, the details of the tournament are subject to change. We will confirm with schools who applied for the tournament the final arrangement within 10 days after the deadline for expression of interests.
We will do our best to make sure that the tournament will be conducted in a safe environment. Masks are required at all times and players are reminded to sanitise their hands from time to time. Equipment will also be sanitised prior to the tournament and from time to time during the tournament.
Players and spectators are required to comply with the latest social distancing measures imposed by the government. This includes the use of the "LeaveHomeSafe" mobile application ("LHS"). Under the current regulation, persons aged 15 or below accompanied by an adult who complied the LHS requirement are exempted from the requirement. Otherwise, persons aged 15 or below may register their personal particulars using a designated form.
Private premises are not covered by the Vaccine Pass Direction issued by the Secretary for Food and Health on 5 May 2022 (G.N. (E.) 497 of 2022). We aim to organise the tournament in a private premise and thus we do not require students to be vaccinated at this stage (but we encourage everyone eligible to do so). The above are subject to changes in laws and regulations, and any administrative requirements by the venue provider. Teachers are hereby reminded to ensure compliance with any guidance issued by the Education Bureau from time to time when sending a team to the tournament.

Entry fee: HK$50 per player
An hour lunch break will be arranged. The finishing time of the tournament may vary subject to the actual tournament schedule.
Eligibility:
- Primary Category: Primary 3-6 students
- Junior Secondary Category: Secondary 1-3 students
- Senior Secondary Category: Secondary 4-6 students
A secondary school can send at most one junior form member to join the Senior Secondary Category if they have fewer than 3 senior secondary students joining the senior team. Students from primary schools are not allowed to join any Secondary categories.
Quota (per category): 1 to 5 players per school. Schools intending to send more players may contact us at info@hkscrabble.org. The HKSPA Executive Committee will decide whether to accept applications from extra players from a school on a case-by-case basis, bearing in mind the challenges posed by the pandemic and the number of schools who applied for the tournament.
All players for the same category from the same school must be enrolled via the same application form.
Application will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.
To compete for school prizes in a category, a school must have at least 3 players competing all games in the category on that day. When calculating school ranking and awards, only the top 3 players from each school will be counted.

25 minutes per player, 5 points unsubstantiated challenge penalty, WESPA rules version 4

Rounds: 5 games
Round 1: Random Draw
Round 2 to 4: Australian Swiss Draw
Round 5: KOTH
Players from the same school will not play against each other in the first 4 rounds. (Note: this is subject to confirmation by HKSPA, after reviewing the number of applications received.)

- Best Player from a School – medals
To compete for school prizes, a school must have at least three players participating in all rounds in the tournament. When calculating school ranking and awards, only the top 3 players from each school will be counted.
Individual Titles
- Top 5 Individual finishers – medals
- High Word – medal
- High Game – medal
- Bingo Machine – medal
- Best New Player - medal
The “Bingo Machine” award will go to the player who played the most bingo words during the whole tournament. In case of a tie, the cumulative scores of the moves with the Bingo words, excluding points gain from challenge (if applicable), will be taken into consideration.
The “Best New Player” award will go to the best player who has not played in any HKSPA-rated tournaments before. The award will only be set up if there are at least 2 players eligible for the award. For Senior Secondary Category, junior form players (if any) are not eligible for the “Best New Player” award.
Expression of interest
Please fill in the online form via HKSPA Tournament Application System on or before 26 May 2022. Application is accepted on a school-basis only. Please submit the name of all players for the same category in one single application.
Players must bring their student identity document to the venue for verification.
Change of players
- Changing players before 26 May 2022: Teachers and coaches may change their team formation on the HKSPA Tournament Enrolment System by themselves. Please note down the reference code after submitting the application, visit this page and type your reference code. Please follow the on-screen instruction on changing players.
- Changing players on or after 26 May 2022: Please email us at info@hkscrabble.org.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you expect any player cannot attend the tournament for any reasons to facilitate our arrangement.
