Updates

(Update 17 April 2017) The Scrabble workshop by Mrs Karen Richards mentioned in the Information to Participants (Qualifying Rounds) is cancelled.

(Update 15 April 2017) The results of the Qualifying Rounds are now available at http://hkspa.byethost7.com/tournaments/20170414national/index.html.

(Update 13 April 2017) Lagged draw will be used in the Qualifying Rounds when appropriate for the sake of smoothness of the tournament. There will also be a spread cap of 300 (not applicable to the Finals Day).

(Update 1 April 2017) Due to insufficient interest, the souvenir (notebook) will be cancelled.

(Update 7 March 2017) To encourage players to contribute their rotating boards, tiles and racks to the Championship, the following incentives are provided for players who contribute a rotating board with a full set of tiles and two racks, the usage of which is solely arranged by the organiser:

For paid players
The 1st board - HK$20 discount on entry fee
The 2nd board onwards - HK$10 discount on entry fee per board

For players with free entries
HK$10 cash reward for whatever number of boards contributed

Date: 14 April 2017 (Fri)
Time: 9:00 – 20:00 (Registration starts at 8:30)
Venue: City University of Hong Kong

Finals Day
Date: 17 April 2017 (Mon)
Time: 10:00 – 19:30
Venue: Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong
North Block, 2 Lower Albert Road, Central, Hong Kong

The Finals Day is for the top 16 available finishers of the Qualifying Rounds only. All other players are not required to attend the Finals Day.

Eligibility: All players with Hong Kong representation statuses defined under the Hong Kong Player Statuses Regulation (http://hkscrabble.org/content/uploads/2016/05/Hong-Kong-Player-Statuses-Regulation.pdf) are eligible for the Championship

Format: Qualifying Rounds: 9 games, Chew pairing
Top 16 available finishers will qualify for the Finals Day

Finals Day: 9 games, first 7 games Chew pairing, last 2 games King-of-the-Hill (KOTH)

25 minutes per player, 5 points unsubstantiated challenge penalty, WESPA rules version 3

Certificates will be given to the top 16 players who advanced to the Finals Day.

Certificates of participation will only be given to participants on request.

Dictionary: Collins Official Scrabble Words 2015 (CSW15)

Entry fee: Full-time primary and secondary students – HK$50 (members), HK$70 (non-members)

Full-time university students – HK$80 (members), HK$100 (non-members)

Others – HK$150 (members), HK$170 (non-members)

Each HKSPA school member has one free quota. (It is free to join HKSPA School Membership: http://hkscrabble.org/membership/)

The best player from each school in the Inter-School Scrabble Championship 2017 – Primary Category and the “Headstart Cup” Hong Kong Inter-Secondary School Scrabble Championship 2017 can join the Championship for free and will not be counted in the free quota.

Players not qualified for the Finals Day volunteering to be an annotator on that day would receive a pro rata refund of the entry fee based on the number of games annotated, receiving up to a full refund.

Official souvenir: Players can order the specially-designed Hong Kong National Scrabble Championship 2017 notebook at a price of HK$50 during online application. No extra notebooks will be available for purchase on both days.
