International tournament in Hong Kong to celebrate Scrabble’s 70th anniversary

Hong Kong Scrabble Players Association (HKSPA) and Mattel Games Hong Kong are organizing the “Scrabble Seventy Years Hong Kong Challenge” in the coming August.

In the past three years, HKSPA organised the Hong Kong Scrabble Challenge for Hong Kong players to challenge the overseas players. This year, it is also the time to celebrate the anniversary of Scrabble, the amazing word game that has accompanied us for the past 70 years.

For the first time, the Main event of the Challenge will be organised in a local shopping mall. The Challenge consists of three tournaments, namely the “Warm-up”, “Main” and “Extra”, on late August 2018.

The Warm-up tournament will be a 7-game round robin tournament to be organised on 24 August 2018. The tournament will be WESPA-rated, and is a good chance for players to practice and warm-up before the Main Tournament.

The Main tournament will take place from 25 to 26 August 2018 in Lei Yue Mun Plaza and is divided into 4 divisions. Division A and B, which are designed for experienced players, will be WESPA-rated. 15 and 12 games will be played throughout 2 days in these two divisions respectively.

The Extra tournament will be another one-day tournament consisting of 8 games, and will take place on 27 August 2018. It is also a WESPA-rated event.

The Challenge this year will be open to all overseas and local players. We wish to see players of all nationalities, from newbies to experienced players, to join the Challenge this year to foster friendships through this word game. As the motto of HKSPA says, Scrabble connect tiles, and people. Your participation is what makes Scrabble special!

To celebrate the seventieth anniversary of Scrabble, the tournament this year is open to all players free of charge. All players will receive souvenirs from Mattel Games Hong Kong and prize-winners will receive prizes sponsored by Mattel Games Hong Kong. Do grab your chance to join this flagship event by enrolling via the event website: 70years.hkscrabble.org. We look forward to seeing you in August!
